Preparing Your Child for Sleepaway Camp: A Guide for Parents

Sending your kid to a sleepaway camp, like the Adventure Sleepaway Camp at Northern Academy, is a momentous achievement for both you and your kid. It provides an opportunity for self-improvement, independence, and lifetime friendships. Here are some pointers to help parents get their kids ready for a positive camp experience and guarantee a smooth transition.

  1. Go over the expectations

Start by going over what to expect at camp. Discuss the daily schedule, any extracurricular activities, and potential new friendships. Encourage them to engage in novel pursuits, meet fresh people, and seize the opportunity for adventure.

  1. Encourage Individuality

Teach your child the fundamentals of living, including how to make their bed, pack their bags, and maintain their personal hygiene. Instilling these behaviors before camp can help kids acclimatize to the experience and take advantage of the opportunity to become more independent that camp offers.

  1. Congregate

Bring your child along as you pack. They will be able to see what is in their bag and learn the value of protecting their possessions thanks to this. Follow the camp’s suggested packing list, making sure to include toiletries, any other necessities, and clothing appropriate for all weather conditions.

  1. Promote Interaction

Tell your child that missing home is normal. Encourage them to write letters or emails home and to interact with the camp personnel. While reassuring them that it’s normal to miss home, emphasize the fun they’ll be enjoying as well.

  1. Travel to the Camp, if you can

If at all possible, take your kid to the camp before they go there. They can feel less anxious before camp by becoming accustomed to the surroundings, which will also help them feel more at ease when they get to camp.
