Pathway Science Bootcamp

Science, in its purest form, is a way to connect with and understand the world around us. At Northern Summer Camp, SciBite—The Real Taste of Science—goes beyond technical skills to remind young learners of the joy of discovery, the excitement of understanding how things work, and the wonder of exploring the endless unknown.

Give yourself three weeks to step into the world of real scientists—not a watered-down simulation, but an authentic research adventure where you’ll hunt for and identify new species of bacteria through Microbe Mission: Catch ’Em All! Venture outdoors to collect soil samples, then return to the lab to cultivate and analyze them using DNA sequencing and colorful biochemical tests.

You’ll also learn how to bring ideas to life through 3D Modeling and 3D Printing, designing and fabricating your own creations from concept to physical prototype. Finally, put your engineering skills to the test by building your own wooden Boomilever—engineered to support the maximum load with the minimum weight.

Get ready for a three-week journey that blends outdoor exploration with hands-on laboratory and engineering challenges. Discover, design, build—and experience science the way professionals do.

Microbe Mission: Catch ’Em All

Step into the role of a real microbiologist. You will collect soil samples outdoors, then return to the lab to grow and isolate bacteria based on colony shapes and colors. Using biochemical tests and 16S rRNA DNA sequencing, you’ll identify each microbe and determine whether it matches known species—or could be something new. You’ll record observations, build microbial profiles, and experience the full process of scientific discovery.

3D Modeling & 3D Printing

Learn how engineers turn ideas into working designs. You’ll create digital models using CAD software called Onshape, explore core design principles, and convert your files into physical objects through 3D printing. Throughout the process, you’ll test, refine, and reprint your designs—gaining real experience with engineering tools used across modern industries.

Boomilever Engineering

How could a 10-gram wooden structure possibly support 15-kg weight? Build a wooden structure that is extremely lightweight yet remarkably strong. You’ll learn the fundamentals of force, tension, and compression, then design and construct your own boomilever. Afterward, you will test how much weight it can hold and refine your design for better performance. This challenge teaches hands-on engineering, problem-solving, and iterative thinking.
